Pakistani Mayoon Dresses

In this article, we feature some fantastic ideas for brides to use an inspiration when picking their Pakistani Mayoon Dresses. The Mayoon ceremony is essentially a pre-wedding custom where the bride enters into a state of seclusion seven to fifteen days before the wedding. She is made free of all the chores and errands during this time and is supposed to stay indoors, away from the public's view especially from guys.

To read more about the Mayoon ceremony, click here.

In modern times, the bride does not go into seclusion. Rather some busy brides and their families combine the Mayoon ceremony with the Mehendi ceremony (putting of henna on the bride) into one big ceremony.

Typically, yellow shades are favored for Mayoon ceremonies. But shades of pink, orange and red dresses are also some popular as Mayoon Dresses.

Here are some ideas on what to wear at your Mayoon ceremony.

This practice is not as common in Pakistan and Indian cultures. However, we have noticed a trend of Pakistani brides choosing matching bridesmaids lehngas. Above is one such example. It is quite a nice style indeed!

What is Ubtan?

What is Ubtan?

A Pakistani-American friend of mine asked this question when it was time for her sister to get married. Her mother and female relatives were planning a mayoon ceremony and talked about Ubtan. This got the bride's sister all confused.

Here is a great article that explains exactly what ubtan is for those of you unfamiliar with the term. Basically, ubtan is a traditional skin enhancer - made with all-natural products - that is commonly used in South Asian countries of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Ubtan - World's First Known Cosmetic
By Dr Pradeep Nagrath

To look beautiful has been an obsession with men and women alike throughout the ages but it differs from one land to another and also according to the time and mode of living. The desire of looking enchantingly beautiful laid the foundation of world’s first known natural cosmetic – ‘Ubtan’, initially started as a ritual in India. The ritual of ‘Ubtan’, also known as ‘Battne di Rasam’ in Punjabi, and ‘Kappumanjal’ in Tamil is one of the vital components of the concept of ‘Solah-Shringaar’ (Sixteen ways of beautification of body). ‘Ubtan’ is a body application used for the beautification of the body, dating back to the remotest antiquity and is the legacy of the rich Indian Heritage.

It is believed that during Vedic era, it was being prescribed by the Vedic Physicians for the protection, nourishment & beautification of the skin. The apparent results obtained with the application of ‘Ubtan’ gave it a wide-spread publicity by which perhaps it became a fashionable routine for men & women, those days, to apply it for the beautification of skin and later on established its credence as a ritual for brides & bridegrooms before marriage.

‘Ubtan’ which is used to bring a enchanting look to the skin, is the paste-mixture of turmeric, saffron, san¬dalwood, bengal-gram, and seeds of yellow mustard, mustard oil and water, is applied by the brides & bridegrooms while reciting ‘Ved Mantras’ or traditional folk songs, as an important ritual of marriages in India. This paste is prepared in various ways to make the skin fair and to nourish it from within. On the occasion of social and religious festivals, preparation of ‘Ubtan’ itself is a fairly enjoyable task for ladies in India. The paste is applied to the whole body for 25 to 30 minutes thereafter scrubbed before taking the customary bath. It helps to improve and tighten sagging skin and keeps the skin glowing for a long time. Earlier it was also customary to make special cosmetics for ladies of high rank and social classes, by adding several other aromatic herbs, yoghurt, milk cream, honey and essence of flowers. Various other ingredients are also added like petals of rose and jasmine, Khus-Khus, drop of lemon juice and other herbs to get a unique beautifying lotion.

‘Ubtan’ is a a powerful exfoliating treatment that stimulates the underlying tissues of the skin. Upon scientific researches of its ingredients, it has been found that the ‘Ubtan’ not only enhances beauty, but also possesses definite medicinal values by virtue of its antifungal, antibacterial, antiperspirant, deodorant & skin-toning properties, thereby ruling out the possibilities of skin infections. It serves the multi¬purpose role of cleanser, astringent, stimulant, and skin-tonic all at the same time. By its revitalising, refreshing & refining actions, ‘Ubtan’ helps in the glowing of complexion and making it appear luscious. It also gives protection from various skin problems including acne, pimples, blemishes, white patches, freckles, blackheads, etc. Its regular usage prevents the occurrence of premature wrinkles, removes scars, & helps to lighten the open pores. The natural ingredients of ‘Ubtan’ build up flabby and drooping tissues, improve blood circulation & skin texture, provide anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, anti-rash, anti-blemishing, anti-bacterial, anti-tanning effects to the skin and nourish it.

As a beauty aid, Curcumin - the alkaloidal content of the main ingredient of Ubtan, Turmeric prevents and cures pigmentation, maintains the PH balance and makes the skin glow. Santalol in Sandal¬wood helps in inhibiting the growth of micro-organisms and preventing skin infections. The woody fibre & Vitamin C in Bengal gram open the blocked pores, maintain the secretions from glands and bleach the sun freckles. Due to its Sandalwood contents, ‘Ubtan’ acts as an astringent and helps to tighten the pores. The crocetin contents of Saffron add to the lustre of the skin and make it glow. The rough nature of Bengal gram powder cleanses it by removing the dead infected parts of the skin. It is also used to promote healing of the cracked & inflamed skin.

The glowing glory and the amazing pharmaco-kinetics of ‘Ubtan’? Were our ancestors really aware of them? It seems they really were. Hats off to them!

Dholki Party Ideas for Pakistani Weddings

In Pakistan, the dholki is one of several pre-wedding festive occasions that is celebrated prior to the actual wedding day. The dholki party is almost equivalent to the bridal shower in the Western culture. The Pakistani bride is donned in a yellow outfit.

The Dolki party is named after the South Asian word dholak meaning drum. The dholki event consists of singing with the dholak as a musical accompaniment, rehearsal of dancing in preparation for the upcoming festivities, and eating good food.

In a lot of Pakistani communities, traditionally, children sing and dance on the beat of the dholak during pre-wedding festivities.

Since all the family from far and wide is gathered for the wedding, the Dholki party is a time for them to enjoy each other's company. Usually close family and friends host Dholki parties in their homes for the bridal party. The dholak provides an interesting accompaniment for the naughty lyrics of the songs aimed at an abashed bride-to-be.

Often times, the Pakistani mayoon ceremony where the ubtan (a paste made from turmeric, sandalwood powder, herbs and aromatic oils) is applied to the bride, occurs at the dholki party. The ubtan is supposed to brighten the skin of the bride, and is part of the beautification ritual of the Pakistani bride.

For the next few days before the wedding, the ubtan will be applied to the bride.

Pakistani Bridal Designers

Pakistani Designers Eyeing Indian Bridal Wear Market

Indian designers watch out! Pakistanis are now eying the Indian bridal wear market with their ethnic lehngas, sarees and embroidered suits.

The Pakistanis may not be as bold as our desi designers in creating the outfits but their bridal creations are very much in demand in India, says Nadia Lakdawala, a Pakistani designer.

“Our mehndi and bridal collection, trousseau, lehngas, shalwar kameez are all very traditionally made, with lot of hand embroidery, which Indian women like a lot,” says Lakdawala, who was here recently to participate in an exhibition.

“Cost is also a big factor in favor of our designs. Most of them start from Rs 4000 and go on to Rs 14000. But the range of Indian bridal wear is very high. No bridal lehnga is less than Rs 25,000,” she says.

Also, craftsmanship holds lot of importance in Pakistani designs… In bridal wear, embroidery, bold prints and bandhini are in demand there, she says.

Lakdawala says a renaissance is taking place in Pakistani fashion. “Our designers are also becoming fashion conscious and know what’s in vogue even outside. But ramp shows and unveiling of new collections is still not very popular there.”

“India is ahead of Pakistan when it comes to experimenting with fashion, art and culture and the designers here are creating bold outfits… Compared to those in our country, it is still traditional designs and dresses which are made by fashion fraternity,” says Lakdawala.

However, many designers go to international fashion weeks and unveil the collections there. Our designs, especially bridal are also a great hit with Indians living in US and England, she says.

Ranjana, who imports suits and sarees from Pakistan, feels even in daily wear, Pakistani designs are becoming popular here.

“Whether it is in cotton, chiffon or silk, the embroidered Pakistani suits are a big rage here,” feels Ranjana, who claims her lot are an instant sellout.

“Their USP is their embroidery… The intricate thread, gold and glass work which is done by village women. It is a household industry there. Then their colors and prints are also bold, which are very much in fashion here,” says Ranjana.

Pakistani Wedding Hairstyles | Bridal Hair Care Solutions

Pakistani brides (or in general desi brides) tend to wear their hair long for their weddings - be it a bridal updo hairstyle or wearing it as long flowing locks. Whatever style the bride chooses, healthy hair is essential to create the desired bridal hairstyle look she desires. Unhealthy hair will not be shining and full of life - it would be dead and limp.

Here are some simple daily tips a Pakistani bride can use to ensure that her hair is healthy in time for her wedding.

Below we showcase a few Pakistani bridal wedding hairstyles.

Proper Hair Care For Natural Black Hair Styles
By Francis Murphy

Hair is naturally organic and possesses natural beauty. Oftentimes, extensive chemical treatments like hair highlights, straightening, and too much of relaxing cause the removal of the natural vitamins and oils from the hair - leading to further hair damages. With proper hair care, the natural beauty can be retained. What better way to enhance the natural look of your hair than by wearing natural styles?

The natural hair styles which come in and out of fashion are the medium comb coils, natural hair knots, twisted braids, long curly locks, cornrow up-do, double strands, short braids, short comb coils, and long locks.

To be able to beautifully incorporate these natural hair styles, it is necessary to provide hair with a proper care. The hair may be lovely in its natural state but it won't stay that way unless it is given the right tending. Black hair, especially the curly ones, can be delicate and tricky to work with. The job of styling it becomes more complicated when the hair does not cooperate.

Make it healthier and manageable by following a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water as the hair has a life of its own. For it to grow and stay beautiful, it needs vitamins and lots of protein.

It is highly recommended to use hydrating shampoo as well as regular conditioning. These are important to keep the hair's moisture.

Avoid hair styles that give excessive tension to the hair. Applying great tension to the hair strands cause a lot of hair damages, apart from making them break easily.

Avoid too much exposure from the sun, strong wind and other dry climates. Use protective gears such as hats and scarves, as well as protective natural hair products.

Do these hair care tips to preserve the beauty of your hair. All you need to do is enhance it by incorporating the right hair style.

At the end, I'd like to share a website with more information on topics like black hair styles and black hair care Visit for more details.
